South Australian Orthopaedic Nurses Association (SAON)

SAON continues its commitment to providing orthopaedic nurses and health professionals interested in Orthopaedics with education, support and resources to enhance their orthopaedic nursing practice. I provide the following summary for 2011.

Education Nights
Our February AGM – had two clinicians speak authoratatively on Venous Thrombo-Embolism (VTE) in Orthopaedics. Jo outlined the many chemical agents involved and Paul emphasised the importance of Patient Assessment and ‘matching the risk’.

• Chemical Prophylaxis
  Josephine To | Clinical Lecturer, School of Pharmacy and Medical Sciences, University of South Australia
• Mechanical Prophylaxis
  Paul McLiesh| Clinical Lecturer, Discipline of Nursing, Faculty of Health Sciences, The University of Adelaide and Clinical Services Coordinator ward R3, Royal Adelaide Hospital.

In May Jacob Munro, the visiting Joint Replacement Fellow to Royal Adelaide Hospital delivered an informative talk on the increasing ‘epidemic’ of Arthoplasty Peri-prosthetic Fracture Management.

The September Education Night was a clinical skills update focussing specifically on the following orthopaedic skills: Traction – Thomas Splint, Hamilton Russell, In-Line, and Gallows Paediatric; Plastering; Slings & Splints.

Attendance at the above meetings accrues 4 CPD hours, plus 1 CPD for membership of SAON and 1 CPD for the journal.

Future Meetings

• ANZONA AGM 27/11/11 in Brisbane
• 5th ANZONA Conference: “BONE” Building Orthopaedic Nurse Excellence, October 27-29, 2011 in Brisbane. SAON members attending this meeting look forward to sharing their conference experiences with other SAON members upon their return.
  
• 5th December – Annual Education and Orthopaedic Christmas Quiz night where everyone’s a winner! Venue: to be confirmed
• 6th February 2012 AGM – Topic: The upcoming AGM will feature Mr Rob Baird, Orthopaedic Consultant, speaking on his experiences as an Orthopaedic surgeon in Afghanistan. Venue: to be confirmed.

SAON Newsletter
SAON publishes 3 Newsletters per year for its members. Next issue due December 2011.

International Journal of Orthopaedic & Trauma Nursing issues 4 journals per year and is included in SAON membership.
